Home Stove for Ocosito
Required to Fulfill Village Needs
Crowdfund an innovative cook stove that was made by Guatemalans for Guatemalans! This home stove will eradicate smoke inhalation and end crippling respiratory health issues and lessen the financial burden, and environmental impact for families.
WHAT IS THE PRODUCT?
This product is an improved cook stove that is fueled by wood. Each contribution provides one-seventh of the funding of the stove, its delivery and installation as well as important training in the home. To have the dignity of ownership, each recipient family will provide the base bricks needed for their stove’s base.
WHAT DOES IT SOLVE?
90% of rural families in Guatemala are cooking over an open fire. This destroys health by causing serious respiratory illness, eye problems and severe burns. Cooking over open fire also depletes finances and forests. On average, 16% of the family’s income is spent on fuelwood or two hours a day collecting wood fuel. When cook stoves are installed in the home all of these issues are solved for decades.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Every year more than 2,000 children under the age of 5 lose their lives to respiratory disease, the leading cause of death in the rural communities. This improved cook stove is 60-65% more efficient, meaning families are spending less on fuel wood and cook time is reduced. They will be saving money on medication to treat respiratory illness and expensive fuel wood, which will help them to advance their life in other areas and take the first steps out of poverty.
WHERE IS IT SOURCED?
The stoves are built with Guatemalan materials and by Guatemalan hands. Months of product research was conducted by the manufacturer working directly with Guatemalan women in order to maintain their traditions and culture while improving cooking methods.
PRODUCT RESEARCH RESULTS
With every cook stove that is installed by MPACT Project contributors, we can reduce the smoke in the homes by 90+% and put 60-65% of the family’s fuel wood expense back in their pockets.
LEVEL OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The impact of a smoke-free home affects the entire family and is therefore part of the human scale development. See the Four Levels of Development.
